Should I use Dog Days Kalamazoo instead boarding?

These are our dogs Rupert & Walt, both Pit Bull mixes.  People tend to ask me, “What do you do with your dogs when you go out of town?”  Well, we don’t go out of town that often since there is plenty to do here in the Kalamazoo area.  But, when we do, my wife Lisa and I are fortunate to have trusted friends take care of them at our house.  Like most of you, I don’t want to board my dogs.  That’s why there’s DOG DAYS Kalamazoo available to watch your dog or cat while you’re away.  While I do not stay overnight at your house, I make 3 trips per day for 30-45 minutes each visit.  These stops are early AM, afternoon, and at night. Hiring Dog Days Kalamazoo versus boarding has these five advantages:

1.  Less stress, since your dog or cat gets to be in its own environment at home.
2.  No worries about catching something from other pets in a boarding facility.
3.  Someone to check on your house, bring in the mail/paper, and make sure everything is in order.
4.  You can leave for your trip and not have to be concerned with dropping off your pet.
5.  Detailed reports via email or text after each visit to give you that “peace of mind” that all’s well.

So, when you are wondering “what do I do with my pet when I want to go on vacation?” Remember that DOG DAYS Kalamazoo is here to serve you! Please make sure to call or email as soon as you know you’re going out of town.  This way we can guarantee we have room in our schedule to accommodate you.  Generally, we need at least 4-5 weeks lead time with holidays and 2-3 weeks otherwise.  Thanks!

Rupert & me.  2017 Kalamazoo Humane Society Dog Walk & K-9 Festival.

Should I hire a pet sitting business or an individual?

You need to hire a dog walker or pet sitter in the Kalamazoo area, but not sure where to look?  Most people will start with a search engine like Google and type in “Kalamazoo dog walkers” or “Pet sitters in Kalamazoo” and see who shows up.  There are also sites such as Sittercity.com, Care.com, and Rover.com.  There you will find an overwhelming number of both individuals and businesses who are members or have ads.  So, who do you contact?  A business? An individual?

Most legitimate dog walking and pet sitting business such as Dog Days Kalamazoo should be three things:

LICENSED

INSURED

BONDED

Great, but what do these terms even mean?

As a LICENSED business, Dog Days Kalamazoo is a LLC–a Limited Liability Company and recognized by the State of Michigan.

As an INSURED business, Dog Days Kalamazoo is covered by State Farm Insurance for any job related injuries or damage.  This includes accidental injury to animals, damage to buildings, outdoor property, water damage, equipment breakdown, and glass expenses.

As a BONDED business, Dog Days Kalamazoo has a financial guarantee that Michael Machota will satisfactorily fulfill contracted work for clients and I am protected against employee dishonesty and theft.

Do lower priced individuals provide this type of coverage? NO, they do not.

In the Kalamazoo area, there are a few different dog walking and pet sitting businesses to choose from including Dog Days Kalamazoo.  However, the number of individuals wanting to do the same work is countless.  The question is do you want a professional business who does pet care full-time in your home OR do you want a random individual who just has a Craigslist ad screaming about LOW prices?

While individuals might be able to undercut our rates because they do not have the same expenses nor have to claim mileage at tax time, the question remains–do you want the person with the cheapest price in your home with your pets?  No, you want the person who you can TRUST.  Remember that anyone can be cheap, but few can be great.  Hiring a Licensed, Insured, and Bonded business gives you peace of mind.

Book now for Spring Break pet sitting with Dog Days Kalamazoo

Spring Break pet sitting Dog Days Kalamazoo

There is still availability for 2017 Spring Break pet sitting with Dog Days Kalamazoo.  I have a few clients scheduled for vacation work in March and April, but there is still room for you.  While it is never too early to schedule work with me, it can be too LATE.  I always tell people:

“As soon as you know you’re going away and will need pet sitting, be sure to let me know.”

Generally, 4 weeks ahead of time is good.  However, with holidays, I advise booking 6-8 weeks in advance.  Why so much time?  Because holidays (and weekends) tend to fill in quicker than other dog walking/pet sitting work.  Plus, there are only so many jobs we can get done in a day.

I do not like to be rushed and I will NOT rush from one job just to get to the next.  I would rather not take additional work than to be overbooked. Pet sitting visits are at least 30 minutes long, while midday dog walking (Mon-Fri) is at least 20 minutes long.  Dog Days Kalamazoo consists of me working full-time and my part-time dog walker Kimberly Desch helping out.

Remember, I always meet ahead of time to:

    1.  Make sure your pet(s) are fine with me
    2.  Thoroughly go over procedures including any medications needed
    3.  Get all emergency contact information
    4.  Get keys and/or access code to house or apartment
    5.  Sign my Authorization Form allowing us to be in your home and transport pets in an emergency

Dog Days Kalamazoo was founded in November 2013 by Michael Machota and is a full-time Dog Walking and Pet Sitting company that is Licensed, Bonded, and Insured.

Going on vacation? Make sure you schedule pet sitting.

Summer vacation Kalamazoo pet sitting.

Summer begins on June 21st and school wraps up for most of us this week.  Many of you have vacations planned or would like to go on vacation in the upcoming months.  DOG DAYS is here for you to watch your dogs or cats while you’re away.  I still have some availability this Summer, but weekends are filling up quite fast!  Make sure to call 269-350-0766 or email me at dogdayskzoo@hotmail.com to reserve your spot.  If you are a dog owner like my wife Lisa and I, you would much rather have your dog stay at home instead of stuck in a boarding facility.  Less stress, less worry, and less hassle!

Some of the main differences between me and my competition:

1.  I don’t have a confusing price structure.

2.  I don’t charge mileage.

3.  I plan each visit for 30 minutes and don’t do brief “pop-ins” or short 10 minute visits.

For the entire Service Area (excluding Oshtemo Twp), I charge $20. per visit and $55./day for 3 visits.  Oshtemo Twp is $5. more per visit due to distance from the home of DOG DAYS in Vicksburg.  Here is my Service Area map:

Kalamazoo Area Map
A typical vacation pet sitting or dog walking day with three stops would be scheduled like this:

Visit 1: 7:00am – 7:30am

Visit 2: 3:00pm – 3:30pm

Visit 3: 9:30pm – 10:00pm

If you have dogs, I take them for a walk each visit or go outside while they take care of business. Even if you have a fenced yard, I NEVER just stay inside while they’re out–I’m always there with them. I then feed them according to their eating schedule, spend the remaining time playing with them, and attending to any house related tasks that need to be completed. I do not have any other employees and am the only person who will be in your home. This way, your cats or dogs become accustomed to me and everything is routine.

I am thankful to have clients who take the time to write me nice emails and reviews. Please see what they have to say about me under the “Testimonials” page. There are also over 10 Facebook reviews and 5 reviews on Google+.

Looking for a professional Kalamazoo pet sitter for Spring Break?

Spring Break pet sitting, dog walking

Spring officially starts next Friday, March 20th.  Have you made your plans for a weekend trip or weeklong Spring Break getaway?  What’s the best option for your cats or dogs?  They probably won’t be very happy locked in a boarding facility.  Let them stay home and schedule a professional pet care company like DOG DAYS Kalamazoo.  We come to you–up to three pet sitting or dog walking visits per day.  In certain circumstances we can stay the night (limited availability).  Not only do we check on your furry friends for 30 minutes each visit, we bring in the mail & newspaper, set out the garbage & recycling, and make sure there’s no issues like leaking pipes or a furnace that’s not working.  Recently, I did have a client with a water heater that was leaking and I was fortunate to catch it in time before it became a big issue.  I turned off the gas and water supply to the tank.  Otherwise, they would have come home to a flooded basement!  They were quite appreciate of me noticing the leak and had to replace a valve on the water heater.

A typical vacation pet sitting or dog walking day with three stops would be scheduled like this:

Visit 1:  7:00am – 7:30am

Visit 2:  3:00pm – 3:30pm

Visit 3:  9:30pm – 10:00pm

For instance if you have dogs, I take them for a walk each visit or go outside while they take care of business.

There are also over 10 Facebook reviews.  I already have most of March filled in and some of April with dog walking and pet sitting stops.  Please give me a call or email so we can get you on the calendar in time for your Spring Break trip!

I don’t sell dog walking. I don’t sell pet sitting. I sell trust.

When I first meet people, I tell them:  I don’t sell dog walking. I don’t sell pet sitting. I sell trust.

When you do a Google search to find a Kalamazoo dog walker or pet sitter for your dog or cat, ask yourself :

“Is this someone I feel comfortable giving the key to my home?”

There’s more to professional pet care than who is charging the lowest rate.  The few dog walking and pet sitting companies in Kalamazoo, such as myself, all have comparable rates–within a few dollars of each other.  Please make sure you spend the time to do adequate research about the person or company.  I have as much information as possible here about me–my first AND last name, my background, family, pets, customer’s pets and their testimonials about me.  I have links at the top of each page to my following four sites:

Twitter

Facebook

LinkedIn

Google+

You can learn everything about me back to my days in college at Loyola University Chicago and Indiana University South Bend. I make it a point to be completely transparent.  I want you to have the confidence knowing I’m a professional doing this full-time and not as a side project or part-time like some of my competitors.  I am a Limited Liability Company (LLC)Bonded and Insured.  I do not have other employees so you know I will be on each and every site.  Please check out what my customers have to say about me under the “Testimonials” page here on my website, reviews on Yelp or Facebook reviews.  I hope to work with you and your family in the future!

Vacation Pet Sitting and Property Check

One of the advantages to hiring me for pet sitting is that I’m diligent in checking the house mechanicals & basement. I recently noticed a client’s water heater was leaking and quickly shut it down. This included turning the water heater completely off as well as cutting the gas supply to it. Here’s an excerpt of the customer’s email to me:

“Hi Mike, Thank you so much for being alert to my malfunctioning water heater. I guess I never thought about how old it might be–installed when the house was built 20 years ago. I have to replace two things, one of which you mentioned (the overflow valve). Thank you for being alert.”

Remember that not all pet sitters and dog walkers are alike.  For some it is just a side project or a hobby.  For me this is my full-time profession.  I treat your pets AND your home as if they were my own.  This means you have nothing to worry about while you’re gone.  Not only will your dogs or cats have less stress staying home instead of being boarded, you have me physically checking on the house and catching problems like this water leak before it became a BIG issue!
